About Me

Hi there!  I'm Deb - sewing enthusiast and creator of Sew YYC.

My love affair with sewing started like a lot of people, as a young child watching my mother at her old Kenmore machine effortlessly creating beautiful dresses from stacks of flat, lifeless fabric.  It was truly magical in my eyes and a skill I immediately felt drawn to learn.  All those years later, my affection and devotion to this hobby is still unwavering.

In 2015 I started the company SewYYC and opened my home studio where I taught hundreds of students how to sew.  It was such a rewarding experience passing along these skills to so many others as my mother did with me.  While teaching, I also started an online PDF pattern printing business which to my surprise, took off much faster than I had anticipated!  Because I’m a one-woman show, I simply didn’t have time to run both businesses, so I eventually made the difficult decision to close the home studio.

With a bit more time to focus on growing my own sewing knowledge, I decided to take on a totally new challenge.  In the summer of 2019, I finally taught myself the holy grail of sewing skills  …how to sew bras!  With a bit of handholding from my good friend Rachel (a custom bra designer for her brand Ivy Rose Designs), the learning curve was smooth and felt effortless. I then spent the next 5 years challenging myself to uncover all that I could about bra fitting, construction, and pattern adaptation.

Which brings us to today!  Although I still am running my PDF pattern printing business and no longer have a teaching space in my home, I found myself compelled to find a way to share this knowledge other sewists.  After some consideration and research for a teaching location, I am excited to announce we have secured a space and will be holding several bra making workshops starting in June 2024!

Dates for the Ruby Bra by Pin Up Girls Patterns have been announced and others will be added as classes fill up and new bra classes are developed.  If you are at a point in your sewing journey where you feel ready to start tackling bras and other lingerie, then I invite you to join me and together we will level up your sewing skills!

Check out the Classes page to see what current offerings there are and contact me if you have any questions or ideas of other classes you might like to see.
